Fotheringay were a five-piece British band that existed for little more than a year in 1970, and represent the high water mark of British ‘folk-rock’.
They released just one album in their lifetime and toured only briefly; and yet, forty years on, their influence and power continue to be felt. Much of this is down to the presence at the group’s heart of Sandy Denny, now widely recognised as one of the most dynamic singers and songwriters of the era. Fotheringay were one of the great missed opportunities of popular music. “Probably very interesting things would’ve happened if they’d have carried on,” veteran folkie Martin Carthy said in a recent documentary film. Happily, a second album 'Fotheringay 2' was released in 2008 using tapes from the aborted follow up to the groups first album. To this illustrious discography we can now, add the live recording at the Essen Grugahalle 'Essen 1970'.
